A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Alice. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Alice comes from the Old French name Aalis, a short form of Adelais, which came from the Germanic Adalheidis, the same name as Adelaide. That goes back to adal “noble” and heit “kind, sort, type”, so Behind the Name gives its meaning as “nobleness, nobility”. Alice was popular in France and England from the 12th century, one of the most common names in England until the 16th century, and was revived in the 19th.
Allie and Ally are the sweetest short forms, and Ali works too. Alison actually started life as a pet form of Alice, and Behind the Name lists Addie and Elke in the same family. The Irish form is Eilís, which some families spell Eilish.
Alice Walker became the first African-American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, for The Color Purple. Canadian writer Alice Munro won the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature for her short stories. And Alice Paul was one of the leading strategists behind the 19th Amendment, which secured American women the vote in 1920.
Alice was a turn-of-the-century favorite. In US Social Security data it was 10th in the 1880s and stayed in the top 20 until the 1920s, when more than 110,000 American girls were named Alice. It fell out of the top 200 after the 1960s but came back at 96th in the 2010s, so there are little Alices and great-grandmother Alices.
The real Alice was Alice Liddell. On July 4, 1862, during a rowing trip from Oxford to Godstow for a picnic, 10-year-old Alice asked Charles Dodgson (better known as Lewis Carroll) to tell a story. The tale he made up for her and her sisters became Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865).
Whether Alice is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Alice on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Alice’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
