Rachel: meaning and origin

Rachel comes from the Hebrew name Raḥel, meaning “ewe”, a female sheep. In the Old Testament, Rachel is the beloved wife of Jacob. Her father tricked Jacob into marrying her older sister Leah first, and only allowed him to marry Rachel too in exchange for seven years of work. She became the mother of Joseph and Benjamin. Behind the Name says the name was common among Jews in the Middle Ages, but English-speaking Christians only took it up after the Protestant Reformation.

Nicknames and variants

Rae is the classic short form, simple and a little bit cool. Rachel also comes in several spellings and versions: Rachael is the most common alternative in English, Rachelle has a French twist, and Raquel is the Spanish and Portuguese form. In German, the name is also spelled Rahel.

Famous people named Rachel

Rachel Carson’s book Silent Spring (1962) is credited with helping launch the global environmental movement. Rachel Weisz won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for The Constant Gardener. And Canadian actress Rachel McAdams rose to fame in 2004 with Mean Girls and The Notebook.

Rachel had a long, slow climb. It sat in the lower half of the US top 200 from the 1880s to the 1950s, then jumped to 33rd in the 1970s and peaked at 15th in the 1990s, when almost 150,000 American girls were named Rachel. It was still in the top 200 in the 2010s, so Rachels range from schoolgirls to great-grandmothers.

Rachel trivia

Rachel Green from Friends gave her name to “The Rachel”, the layered, shoulder-length haircut Jennifer Aniston wore in the show’s first two seasons. It was created by her hairstylist, Chris McMillan. Behind the Name suggests the character may have helped slow the name’s decline after its 1980s and 90s peak.

Gift ideas that suit a Rachel

  • For a nature lover. Field notes and birdwatching lists, inspired by Rachel Carson.
  • For a Friends fan. Favorite quotes, episode rankings and a page for that haircut.
  • For a romantic. A nod to Rachel McAdams in The Notebook: love letters, plans and keepsakes.
  • For a 40th birthday. Rachel peaked in the 1980s and 90s, so plenty of Rachels are turning 40.

How Rachel can use it

Any Rachel, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.

The little things that make it hers

There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Rachel can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
