Pat's Notebook puts her name front and center, written in flowing script across a soft watercolor apple blossom design.
Pat is a short form of Patricia or Patrick, says Behind the Name. Patricia is the feminine form of Patricius, the Latin name behind Patrick, and Behind the Name says it was probably not used as an actual given name until the 18th century, beginning in Scotland. Pat has been used on its own for both girls and boys.
Behind the Name lists Patsy, Patti, Pattie, Patty, Tricia and Trish as variants of Pat, with Patricia and Patrice as the full feminine forms.
Pat Summitt, born Patricia Sue Head on June 14, 1952, was one of the greatest coaches in basketball history. Wikipedia says she led the University of Tennessee Lady Vols from 1974 to 2012, winning eight NCAA championships and 1,098 games, the most in college basketball at the time she retired. She won Olympic silver as a player in 1976, coached the US women to gold in 1984, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.
Pat had its moment in the mid-20th century. US Social Security data has it at 166th in the 1930s and 160th in the 1940s, when more than 16,100 American girls were registered simply as Pat. Behind the Name says it last made the US top 1,000 for girls in 1966, at 991st.
First Lady Pat Nixon was not born a Pat. Wikipedia says she was named Thelma Catherine Ryan, and her father called her Pat because she was born on March 16, 1912, the day before Saint Patrick’s Day, and had Irish ancestry. She started using “Pat” when she enrolled in college in 1931 but never legally changed her name. As first lady she became the most traveled in US history at that time.
Any Pat, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.
There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Pat can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
How big is Pat’s Notebook? About the size of a trade paperback book: 6 x 9 inches (15.2 x 22.9 cm), 160 lined pages.
