Give Ollie a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Ollie's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Ollie is a diminutive of Oliver, Olivia or Olive, says Behind the Name, and Wikipedia adds Olympia and Olga to the list of names it can shorten. For girls it usually stands for Olive or Olivia. The ending -ie gives it the warm, friendly sound of a family nickname.
Behind the Name lists Liv, Livia, Livvy, Livy, Oli and Olly as related English forms, and Olive and Olivia as full forms. Wikipedia adds the spellings Olie and Oly.
Ollie Imogene Shepard (1933 to 2016), known as Jean Shepard, was one of country music’s first significant female artists. Wikipedia says she was born in Oklahoma, raised in California with nine siblings, and formed an all-female band, the Melody Ranch Girls. Her duet “A Dear John Letter” with Ferlin Husky topped the country charts in 1953, and she was a member of the Grand Ole Opry for 60 years.
Ollie was a girls’ name of the 19th and early 20th centuries. US Social Security data has it in the top 200 from the 1880s to the 1910s, highest at 106th in the 1880s, with more than 19,500 girls named Ollie over those four decades. Behind the Name says it last ranked for US girls in 1960, at 862nd, and in 2025 it was 31st in Ireland and 56th in Scotland.
Every skateboarder learns an Ollie. Wikipedia says the ollie is the trick where rider and board leap into the air without using the hands, by popping the tail and sliding the front foot forward. It is named after Alan Gelfand, nicknamed “Ollie”, who in 1978 learned to do no-handed aerials in bowls and pools with a gentle raising of the nose. It is often the first trick a new skater learns.
Ollie’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Ollie’s Notebook” on the cover tells Ollie it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Ollie’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
