Where does the name Athena come from?

The meaning of Athena is unknown, says Behind the Name. She was the Greek goddess of wisdom and warfare and the patron of Athens, and her name probably comes from the city rather than the other way round. The earliest mention of her seems to be a 15th-century BC Mycenaean inscription from Knossos on Crete. She is associated with the olive tree and the owl.

Other forms of Athena

Behind the Name lists Athene as a variant from Greek mythology, Athina as the modern Greek form, Atena in Italian and Portuguese, Atenea in Spanish and Afina in Russian. Thena is a sweet short form.

Well-known Athenas

The original Athena is the goddess herself. Wikipedia says she was linked with wisdom, warfare and handicraft, was later identified with the Roman Minerva, and is usually shown with a helmet and spear. Her symbols include owls, olive trees and snakes. In the founding myth of Athens she beat Poseidon in a contest for the city by creating the first olive tree, while his gift was only a salt-water spring.

Athena’s popularity

Athena is a 2010s name in America. US Social Security data has it at 173rd in the 2010s, when more than 18,300 girls were named Athena. Behind the Name has it 109th in the US and 90th in England and Wales in 2025, 89th in Canada in 2024, and ninth in the Philippines in 2022.

A few more things about Athena

You can see a 42-foot Athena in Tennessee. Wikipedia says the Parthenon in Nashville’s Centennial Park is a full-scale replica of the Athens original, built in 1897 for the Tennessee Centennial Exposition. Inside stands Alan LeQuire’s 1990 re-creation of the Athena Parthenos, the lost gold and ivory statue attributed to Phidias, which stood about 13 meters (42 feet) high.

A notebook for every Athena

Athena’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Athena’s Notebook” on the cover tells Athena it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
