Nettie's Notebook puts her name front and center, written in flowing script across a soft watercolor apple blossom design.
Nettie is a diminutive of names ending in -nette, says Behind the Name, such as Annette or Jeanette. It was a well-used name in its own right in America in the late 1800s, when it was in the girls’ top 100, and it still has a friendly, old-fashioned charm.
Nettie is already a pet name, so most Netties need nothing shorter. Behind the Name links it to Annette and Jeanette, either of which makes a grown-up long form.
Nettie Stevens, born in Cavendish, Vermont, on July 7, 1861, was the geneticist who discovered sex chromosomes. Wikipedia says she earned her degrees at Stanford, then a PhD at Bryn Mawr. In 1905 she found that male mealworms produce two kinds of sperm, one with a large chromosome and one with a small one, and that these decide whether offspring are female or male. They became known as the X and Y chromosomes.
Nettie was a 19th-century favorite. US Social Security data has it at 65th in the 1880s and 80th in the 1890s, still in the top 200 in the 1910s, when more than 9,300 American girls were named Nettie. Behind the Name says it last made the US top 1,000 in 1962.
Nettie’s letters are at the heart of a Pulitzer Prize winner. In Alice Walker’s novel The Color Purple (1982), which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award, Celie’s younger sister Nettie runs away and promises to write. Wikipedia says the book is an epistolary novel, told in letters, and that Celie never receives Nettie’s and comes to believe her sister is dead.
Any Nettie, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.
There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Nettie can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
How big is Nettie’s Notebook? About the size of a trade paperback book: 6 x 9 inches (15.2 x 22.9 cm), 160 lined pages.
Where do I buy it? It’s sold on Amazon in the US, Australia and the UK. Amazon prints and ships each copy and handles delivery and returns.
