Where does the name Molly come from?

Molly is a medieval pet form of Mary. Behind the Name says it developed from Malle and Molle, other medieval diminutives, and Wikipedia explains the trick behind it: like other English nicknames from the Middle Ages, it swapped the r for an l. Wikipedia adds that Molly has also been used for Margaret and Martha since the 1700s, and as a name in its own right since at least 1720.

Other forms of Molly

Behind the Name lists Mollie, Polly and Pollie as variants of Molly, and Wikipedia adds Molli. Polly is Molly’s old rhyming twin, and Wikipedia says surnames such as Moll, Mollett and Mollison come from Molly.

Well-known Mollys

Molly Ringwald became a teen idol in John Hughes’s Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink. The “Unsinkable Molly Brown”, Margaret Brown, survived the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 and urged the crew of Lifeboat No. 6 to go back for survivors; Debbie Reynolds played her on film in 1964. Behind the Name adds James Joyce’s Molly Bloom, of Ulysses.

Molly’s popularity

Molly has been in the US top 1000 every year since 1880, Wikipedia says. US Social Security data has it in the girls’ top 200 from the 1970s on, rising to 94th in the 1990s and 100th in the 2000s, with more than 33,000 Mollys each decade. Wikipedia adds that it has been a top-100 name in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and the UK since the 1990s.

A few more things about Molly

Molly Pitcher is a Revolutionary War legend. Wikipedia says the nickname belongs to a woman who fought in the war, most often identified as Mary Ludwig Hays at the Battle of Monmouth in 1778, though Margaret Corbin at Fort Washington in 1776 is another candidate. Wikipedia says the stories helped make Molly popular in America.

A notebook for every Molly

Molly’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Molly’s Notebook” on the cover tells Molly it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
