What does the name Martha mean?

Martha comes from Aramaic, meaning “the lady” or “the mistress”, the feminine form of a word meaning “master”. In the New Testament, Martha is the sister of Lazarus and Mary of Bethany, and a witness when Jesus brings her brother back to life. Behind the Name says the name was not used in England until after the Protestant Reformation.

Martha nicknames and other forms

Martha has some surprising nicknames. Mattie and Martie are the obvious ones, but in Colonial America, Patty, Patti and Patsy were used too, as rhyming forms of Mattie. Wikipedia notes that Molly has been used for Martha since the 18th century as well. In Spanish, a little Martha is Martita.

Some famous Marthas

Martha Washington, wife of George Washington, was the first First Lady of the United States, known in her day as “Lady Washington”. Martha Stewart built a business around home and hospitality, from Martha Stewart Living magazine to her TV shows. And Martha Graham, the pioneer of modern dance, danced and taught for more than 70 years.

Martha through the decades

Martha is one of America’s most dependable names. In US Social Security data it ranked between 18th and 30th in every decade from the 1880s to the 1940s, when more than 95,000 American girls were named Martha. It slipped after that and left the top 200 after the 1970s, so most Marthas today are in their 50s or older.

Did you know?

The Beatles’ song “Martha My Dear” (1968) was written by Paul McCartney and named after his Old English Sheepdog, Martha. Martha Graham was the first dancer to perform at the White House and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1976. First Lady Betty Ford had studied dance with her.

Who is it for and how she can use it

Whether Martha is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.

Why personalized works

Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Martha on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
