Marie's Notebook is a lined journal with one name on the cover, hers. The name sits in flowing script above a soft pink watercolor apple blossom design.
Marie is the French and Czech form of Maria, the name that gives us Mary. It has been very common in France since the 13th century, and Behind the Name says that at the start of the 20th century about 20 percent of French girls were named Marie. In France it is even used for boys in pairings such as Jean-Marie. A famous royal bearer was Marie Antoinette, queen of France.
Marie shares its pet names with the whole Mary family. May and Mae are old-fashioned favorites, Mamie is the vintage one, and Mimi is the playful one. Marion began as a diminutive too. Marie also loves company: it joins other names to make Annmarie and Rosemarie.
Marie Curie was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the first person to win two, in physics in 1903 and chemistry in 1911. Marie Kondo turned tidying into a worldwide movement with The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and her “spark joy” method. And Marie Osmond was 14 when “Paper Roses” made her the youngest female act with a number-one country single.
Marie was a top-ten name around 1900. In US Social Security data it was 10th in the 1890s, 8th in the 1900s and 11th in the 1910s, and more than 110,000 American girls were named Marie in the 1920s. It stayed in the top 200 until the 1980s, so Maries today range from their 40s to well past 100.
Marie Curie’s papers from the 1890s are still so radioactive that they are kept in lead-lined boxes, and anyone who wants to read them has to wear protective clothing. Her notebooks are expected to stay radioactive for well over a thousand years. She named polonium, the first element she and Pierre discovered, after her native Poland.
This is a notebook for every kind of Marie: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.
Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Marie’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
How big is Marie’s Notebook? The notebook measures 6 x 9 inches (roughly 15 x 23 cm) and has 160 lined pages.
