Maria: meaning and origin

Maria is the Latin form of the Greek Maria, from the Hebrew Miriam, the same name that gives us Mary. It is the usual form in many European languages and a secondary form in English, where Mary is the traditional spelling. Behind the Name notes that in Germany, Poland and Italy it is sometimes even used as a masculine middle name. Royal Marias include two ruling queens of Portugal and the Habsburg ruler Maria Theresa.

Nicknames and variants

Maria comes with pet names in dozens of languages. In English, Mia, Mimi and Molly all grew from the same family, and in Dutch the short form Ria is popular. Marita is another pretty diminutive. And in Spanish-speaking countries Maria is often paired with a second name, as in María José or María Elena.

Famous people named Maria

Maria Montessori, one of the first women to attend medical school in Italy, opened her first Casa dei Bambini, or Children’s House, in Rome in 1907, and her teaching method is now used around the world. Maria Callas was the soprano hailed as “La Divina”. And Maria von Trapp’s 1949 memoir inspired The Sound of Music.

Maria has never really gone out of style. It was in the US top 200 in every decade of Social Security data from the 1880s to the 2010s, peaking at 35th in the 1970s, when more than 76,000 American girls were named Maria. That makes it one of the steadiest names around: a Maria could be any age at all.

Maria trivia

Maria may be the only name with two famous show tunes of its own: “Maria” from West Side Story and “Maria” from The Sound of Music, where the nuns ask “How do you solve a problem like Maria?” Julie Andrews played Maria von Trapp in the 1965 film. Italy has honored Maria Montessori on its coins and banknotes.

How Maria can use it

Any Maria, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.

The little things that make it hers

There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Maria can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
