Lorraine's Notebook puts her name front and center, written in flowing script across a soft watercolor apple blossom design.
Lorraine is a place name. Behind the Name says it comes from the region of eastern France, originally meaning “kingdom of Lothar”, after a Frankish king who was a great-grandson of Charlemagne; in German the region is Lothringen, from the Latin Lothari regnum. Wikipedia says the name has been used in the English-speaking world, especially in the US and Canada, since the Franco-Prussian War brought the region to North American attention. Behind the Name adds that it became popular after World War I, when Lorraine was in the news again.
Behind the Name lists Lori, Lorie, Lorinda, Lorri and Lorrie as diminutives and Laraine, Loraine and Lorayne as variant spellings. Its Latin cousin is Lorena, used in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. Lori is the cheerful everyday pick.
Playwright Lorraine Hansberry was the first Black American woman to have a play performed on Broadway, A Raisin in the Sun, and a line from one of her speeches inspired Nina Simone’s song “To Be Young, Gifted and Black”. Lorraine Bracco played Karen Hill in Goodfellas (1990) and psychiatrist Jennifer Melfi in The Sopranos. And Scottish broadcaster Lorraine Kelly has presented her own morning show, Lorraine, since 2010.
Lorraine rose after World War I. US Social Security data has it entering the top 200 at 110th in the 1910s and reaching its best rank, 50th, in the 1920s, when nearly 50,000 American girls were named Lorraine. It stayed popular for decades, at 62nd in the 1930s, 95th in the 1940s and 126th in the 1950s, before a final appearance at 171st in the 1960s.
Lorraine has a famous dish. Wikipedia says quiche Lorraine, the version with bacon or lardons, takes its name from the region, and that the word quiche was first recorded in Lorraine in 1605; it may be related to the German Kuchen, “cake”. The region’s double-barred Cross of Lorraine became the symbol of Free France in World War II.
