Where does the name Kristen come from?

Kristen has two histories. Behind the Name lists it as the Danish and Norwegian form of Christian, and separately as a variant of Kristin, the Scandinavian form of Christine. Wikipedia explains that in Norway, Sweden and Denmark Kristen is a male name, while in English-speaking countries it is now usually a female name, an alternative spelling of Kristin. It adds that by the mid-1970s Kristen had become the more popular spelling for newborn girls. Both lines go back to the Latin Christianus, meaning “a Christian”.

Other forms of Kristen

Behind the Name lists Christen, Cristen, Kristin, Kristyn and Krysten as variants, so there is a spelling for every taste. Scotland has its own relatives in Kirsteen, Kirstin, Kirstie and Kirsty. Kirsty and Kirstie make warm everyday nicknames.

Well-known Kristens

Kristen Bell had her breakout as the title character in Veronica Mars, starred in The Good Place, and voiced Princess Anna in Disney’s Frozen (2013) and Frozen 2 (2019). Kristen Wiig spent seven seasons on Saturday Night Live and co-wrote and starred in Bridesmaids (2011), which earned her an Academy Award nomination for its screenplay. And Kristen Stewart achieved international stardom as Bella Swan in the five Twilight films, released yearly from 2008 to 2012.

Kristen’s popularity

Kristen is a Gen X and millennial favorite. US Social Security data has it entering the top 200 at 193rd in the 1960s, then 72nd in the 1970s, and reaching its best rank, 38th, in the 1980s, when more than 83,000 American girls were named Kristen. It was still 61st in the 1990s before leaving the top 200, so most Kristens are now in their 30s and 40s.

A few more things about Kristen

Frozen is a Kristen double. Kristen Bell voiced Anna, and Wikipedia says the film’s songs were co-written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez with her husband Robert Lopez. The couple won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Let It Go”, and won again four years later for “Remember Me” from Coco (2017).

A notebook for every Kristen

Kristen’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Kristen’s Notebook” on the cover tells Kristen it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
