Kate's Notebook is a lined journal with one name on the cover, hers. The name sits in flowing script above a soft pink watercolor apple blossom design.
Kate is a short form of Katherine, often used on its own, says Behind the Name. It has been used in England since the Middle Ages, and it is what Katherina is called in Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew (1593). Katherine comes from the Greek Aikaterine, of debated origin, and was later linked with the Greek word katharos, “pure”.
Behind the Name lists Katey, Katie and Katy as English diminutives, and Kat, Kathy, Kay, Kit and Kitty among Kate’s English relatives.
Kate Winslet was born on October 5, 1975. Wikipedia says she made her film debut in Heavenly Creatures (1994), won a BAFTA as Marianne Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility (1995), and found global stardom in James Cameron’s Titanic (1997), the highest-grossing film of its time. She has won an Academy Award, two Emmys and five Golden Globes.
Kate has had two American eras. US Social Security data has it at 97th in the 1880s and 147th in the 1890s, then back at 168th in the 2000s, when more than 20,700 girls were named Kate. Behind the Name says it ranked 520th in the US in 2025 and 52nd in Ireland.
A teenage Kate saved a train. Wikipedia says that on the night of July 6, 1881, a flash flood washed out a railroad bridge over Honey Creek, Iowa, and a locomotive plunged in. Kate Shelley, 17, crawled across the Des Moines River bridge on her hands and knees, with only lightning to see by, then walked about two miles to warn the station and stop a passenger train. She was the first American woman to have a bridge named after her.
This is a notebook for every kind of Kate: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.
Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Kate’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
How big is Kate’s Notebook? The notebook measures 6 x 9 inches (roughly 15 x 23 cm) and has 160 lined pages.
