Jenny: meaning and origin

Jenny began as a medieval English diminutive of Jane, says Behind the Name, and since the mid-20th century it has mostly been treated as a short form of Jennifer. Wikipedia says Jennifer is the Cornish form of Guinevere, and that Jennie was the more common spelling of Jenny before the 20th century.

Nicknames and variants

Behind the Name lists Jen, Jenn, Jenni, Jennie and Jenna among Jenny’s relatives, along with Janie and Janey from the Jane side of the family.

Famous people named Jenny

Opera singer Jenny Lind, the “Swedish Nightingale”, was born in Stockholm in 1820. Wikipedia says she became famous after singing Agathe in Der Freischütz at the Royal Swedish Opera in 1838. Her voice was damaged within a few years, and the teacher Manuel García saved it. She worked closely with Felix Mendelssohn, and retired from opera at 29 after two acclaimed seasons in London. She has even appeared on banknotes.

Jenny was a 1970s and 1980s choice. US Social Security data has it at 132nd in the 1970s, when more than 22,900 American girls were named Jenny, and 150th in the 1980s. That adds up to more than 42,600 girls.

Jenny trivia

Jenny Lind’s American tour was a sensation. Wikipedia says she came to the United States in 1850 at the invitation of the showman P. T. Barnum and gave 93 large-scale concerts for him before touring on her own. She gave most of her earnings to charity, principally to endow free schools in Sweden. With her new husband, Otto Goldschmidt, she went back to Europe in 1852 and settled in England in 1855.

Any Jenny, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.

The little things that make it hers

There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Jenny can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
