Give Heather a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Heather's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Heather comes from the English word for the low shrub with pink or white flowers that grows in rocky places, especially in Scotland. It developed from the Middle English hather, and Wikipedia says the spelling changed in the 18th century because people linked it with heath, the open land where heather grows. Behind the Name says it was first used as a given name in the late 19th century but didn’t become popular until the second half of the 20th.
Heather rarely gets shortened, but it has an interesting relative. Heath, the word it was linked with, is often regarded as the masculine form of the name, and Wikipedia notes it has occasionally been given to girls in the US too. There’s also a botanical sister name: Erica, which coincides with the Latin word for heather.
Heather Knight captained England to victory at the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup, in her first World Cup as captain. Heather Locklear played Sammy Jo on Dynasty and Amanda Woodward on Melrose Place, earning four straight Golden Globe nominations for the second. And Heather Morris played the cheerleader Brittany S. Pierce on Glee.
Heather is a 1970s classic. It broke into the US top 200 in the 1960s at 127th, then leapt to 8th in the 1970s, when more than 203,000 American girls were named Heather. It was still 10th in the 1980s and 45th in the 1990s, so most Heathers today are somewhere between their late 20s and mid 50s.
The 1988 cult film Heathers, starring Winona Ryder, is set around a high-school clique in which every girl except the heroine, Veronica Sawyer, is named Heather. It came out right at the end of the name’s peak, when a class with three Heathers was entirely believable.
Heather’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Heather’s Notebook” on the cover tells Heather it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Heather’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
