Where does the name Grace come from?

Grace comes from the English word grace, which goes back to the Latin gratia. It was one of the virtue names created by the Puritans in the 17th century, and it is often given in reference to the Christian idea of divine grace, with a sense of beauty and charm too. Behind the Name says it was very popular at the end of the 19th century, faded, then came back strongly at the end of the 20th. It was the top girls’ name in England and Wales in 2006.

Other forms of Grace

Gracie is the sweet, classic nickname for a Grace. In Italian, the pet form is Graziella, and in Spanish it’s Chela. Modern parents have also created longer versions, such as Gracelyn and Gracelynn, which shorten back to Gracie.

Well-known Graces

Grace Kelly won the Best Actress Oscar for The Country Girl (1954) and starred in three Hitchcock thrillers before retiring at 26 to become Princess of Monaco. Grace Hopper, a US Navy rear admiral, was a computer pioneer whose work fed into the COBOL programming language. And Grace Darling became a heroine in 1838 when she helped save nine people from a shipwreck.

Grace’s popularity

Grace has come full circle. In US Social Security data it was 14th in the 1880s and in the top 50 until the 1920s, then slid to 200th by the 1950s before dropping out. It returned in the 1990s, reached 15th in the 2000s and was 19th in the 2010s, so today’s Graces are mostly very young or very wise.

A few more things about Grace

In 1947, Grace Hopper’s team found a moth stuck in a relay of the Harvard Mark II computer. They taped it into the log with the note “First actual case of bug being found”, and the logbook, moth and all, is now at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. That may be the most famous notebook entry in computing.

Gift ideas with Grace in mind

  • For a coder. Algorithms, ideas and bug reports, in honor of Grace Hopper.
  • For a wedding planner. Lists and seating charts for a Grace who’s getting married.
  • For a new baby. Grace is back in the top 20, so it’s a keepsake for baby’s first year.
  • For a christening. With a name rooted in divine grace, it’s a thoughtful gift for the day.

A notebook for every Grace

Grace’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Grace’s Notebook” on the cover tells Grace it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
