Gail's Notebook is a lined journal with one name on the cover, hers. The name sits in flowing script above a soft pink watercolor apple blossom design.
Gail started as a short form. Behind the Name says it is short for Abigail, the biblical name from the Hebrew Avigayil, “my father is joy”. Wikipedia explains that Gail has been used as both a masculine and a feminine name, and that until the 1930s it was equally common for both. Between the 1930s and 1960s its use for girls increased, until by about 1960 it was mostly feminine.
Gail is already a nickname, so its variety is in spelling. Behind the Name lists Gale, Gayla, Gayle and Gaila as variants, and Wikipedia adds Gaile. The long form, Abigail, gives Abby and Abbie as alternatives. Gayle is the most familiar alternative spelling.
Sprinter Gail Devers won the Olympic 100 meters in 1992 and again in 1996, only the second woman to defend that title, and also won three world titles in the 100-meter hurdles. Gail Simone is the longest-running female writer of Wonder Woman to date and also wrote Birds of Prey and Batgirl. And novelist Gail Godwin has written 14 novels, including five best-sellers and three National Book Award finalists.
Gail is a 1940s and 1950s name. US Social Security data has it entering the top 200 at 144th in the 1930s and jumping to 53rd in the 1940s. It reached its best rank, 44th, in the 1950s, when more than 85,000 American girls were named Gail, and was 126th in the 1960s before leaving the top 200.
Gail Devers won Olympic gold after nearly losing the use of her feet. Wikipedia says she was diagnosed with Graves’ disease in 1990, and during radiation treatment her feet blistered and swelled until she could barely walk. She recovered after the radiation treatment was stopped, and in 1992 she won the Olympic 100 meters.
This is a notebook for every kind of Gail: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.
Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Gail’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
How big is Gail’s Notebook? The notebook measures 6 x 9 inches (roughly 15 x 23 cm) and has 160 lined pages.
