Flora: meaning and origin

Flora comes from the Latin flos, meaning “flower”, says Behind the Name. Flora was the Roman goddess of flowers and spring, the wife of Zephyr, the west wind. It has been a given name since the Renaissance, starting in France, and in Scotland it was sometimes used for the Gaelic Fionnghuala.

Nicknames and variants

Behind the Name lists Flo, Floretta, Florrie, Florry, Floy and Floella as English diminutives, with Fleur and Flore in French and Fiore in Italian.

Famous people named Flora

Flora MacDonald was born in 1722 on South Uist, in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. Wikipedia says she is best known for helping Charles Edward Stuart escape government troops after the Battle of Culloden in 1746, with the prince disguised as an Irish maid called Betty Burke. She was held in the Tower of London, later moved to North Carolina in 1773, and returned to Scotland.

Flora was a late-1800s favorite. US Social Security data has it at 75th in the 1880s and 96th in the 1890s, and it stayed in the top 200 through the 1920s, when nearly 14,000 American girls were named Flora. Wikipedia says it has been back in the top 1,000 since 2019.

Flora trivia

Ancient Rome threw Flora a party every spring. Wikipedia says the Floralia was held in her honor on April 27, or April 28 in the Julian calendar, and included the Games of Flora, which lasted six days under the empire. Ovid wrote that hares and goats were released as part of the festivities.

The little things that make it hers
