Eloise's Notebook is a lined journal with one name on the cover, hers. The name sits in flowing script above a soft pink watercolor apple blossom design.
Eloise comes from the Old French Héloïse, says Behind the Name, probably from the Germanic Helewidis, built from heil, “healthy, whole”, and wit, “wide”. It is sometimes linked with the Greek helios, “sun”, or with Louise, but there is no real connection. A medieval English form, Helewis, died out after the 13th century, and the name was revived as Eloise in the 19th century.
Behind the Name lists Elouise as an English variant, Éloïse and Héloïse as French forms, Eloisa in Italian and Eloísa in Spanish and Portuguese. Ellie and Lou are natural short forms for everyday use.
The first famous Eloise was Héloïse (about 1101 to 1164), a French nun, philosopher, writer and abbess. Wikipedia says her love affair and secret marriage with the theologian Peter Abelard made her famous, and her surviving letters are considered a foundation of French and European literature. In 1147 she was granted the rank of prelate nullius, giving her roughly the standing of a bishop.
Eloise had a first run a century ago. US Social Security data has it at 198th in the 1910s and 181st in the 1920s, with more than 18,900 American girls named Eloise across those two decades. It is back in fashion now: Behind the Name has it 49th in the US and 35th in New South Wales in 2025, and 69th in Canada in 2024.
The most famous fictional Eloise lives at the Plaza. Wikipedia says Kay Thompson’s Eloise books, illustrated by Hilary Knight, follow a girl who lives in New York’s Plaza Hotel with her nanny, her dog Weenie and her turtle Skipperdee. The first book came out in 1955, followed by Eloise in Paris (1957), Eloise at Christmastime (1958) and Eloise in Moscow (1959).
This is a notebook for every kind of Eloise: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.
Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Eloise’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
How big is Eloise’s Notebook? The notebook measures 6 x 9 inches (roughly 15 x 23 cm) and has 160 lined pages.
