Ebony: meaning and origin

Ebony comes from the English word for the black wood of the ebony tree, says Behind the Name, ultimately from the Egyptian hbnj. In America it is used most often in the Black community. Wikipedia says it was among the 1,000 most popular names for American girls from 1971 to 2005, and spelling variants include Ebonee and Eboni.

Nicknames and variants

Behind the Name lists Eboni as a variant, and Wikipedia adds Ebonee. Eb and Bonnie are friendly short forms.

Ebony trivia

Ebony magazine was named for the wood. Wikipedia says John H. Johnson founded it in Chicago in 1945, and his wife Eunice Walker Johnson chose the name, thinking of the dark wood. Modeled on Life, it set out to cover African-American achievement in a positive light. The first issue appeared on November 1, 1945, with a press run of 25,000 copies that sold out completely.

Any Ebony, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.

The little things that make it hers

There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Ebony can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
