Give Whitney a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Whitney's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Whitney comes from an English surname, which in turn came from a place name probably meaning “white island”, from the Old English hwit and ieg, says Behind the Name. It became a girls’ name thanks to actress Whitney Blake in the 1960s, then got a big boost from Whitney Houston in the 1980s.
Neither Behind the Name nor Wikipedia lists a formal nickname, but Wikipedia does give Whittney as a variant spelling and notes that Whitney is used for boys too. Whit is an easy short form, though not a listed one.
Whitney Houston, known as “the Voice”, sold more than 220 million records. Her version of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” from The Bodyguard (1992) is the best-selling single by a woman, and her “Star-Spangled Banner” at the 1991 Super Bowl was widely acclaimed. Wikipedia says she began singing in a Newark church choir at five.
Whitney is the 1980s in a name. US Social Security data has it at 64th in the 1980s, when more than 44,300 American girls were named Whitney, and 99th in the 1990s. It never made the top 200 in any other decade, so most Whitneys are now in their 30s and 40s.
The highest point in the contiguous United States is Mount Whitney in California, at 14,505 feet. Wikipedia says the California Geological Survey named it in 1864 after Josiah Whitney, the state geologist. The survey’s Clarence King climbed nearby Mount Langley by mistake in 1871, and when he finally reached the real summit in 1873 he was a month too late to be first.
Whitney’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Whitney’s Notebook” on the cover tells Whitney it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Whitney’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
