What does the name Arianna mean?

Arianna is the Italian form of Ariadne, says Behind the Name. Ariadne possibly means “most holy”, from the Greek ari, “most”, and the Cretan Greek adnos, “holy”, though some scholars think the name is older than Greek. In myth she was the daughter of King Minos who helped Theseus escape the Labyrinth.

Arianna nicknames and other forms

Behind the Name lists Ariana, Arienne, Aryana and Aryanna as English relatives, Ariane and Arianne in French, and Ariadna in Spanish, Catalan, Polish and Russian. Ari and Anna are both easy to pull out of the name, though neither is listed formally.

Some famous Ariannas

Arianna Huffington was born Ariadnē-Anna Stasinopoúlou in Athens in 1950. Wikipedia says she moved to Britain at 16, studied economics at Girton College, Cambridge, and became the first foreign president of the Cambridge Union. She co-founded The Huffington Post, which AOL bought in 2011, and later founded Thrive Global.

Arianna through the decades

Arianna is a 21st-century name. US Social Security data has it at 87th in the 2000s and 56th in the 2010s, when more than 41,800 American girls were named Arianna. It had never made the top 200 before, so most Ariannas are children, teens or young adults.

Did you know?

Arianna is also the title of one of the first operas ever written. Claudio Monteverdi’s L’Arianna was first performed in Mantua on May 28, 1608, for a royal wedding. Wikipedia says the libretto survives, but all of the music is lost except one famous scene, the “Lamento d’Arianna”, or Ariadne’s Lament.

Who is it for and how she can use it

Whether Arianna is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.

Why personalized works

Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Arianna on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
