Give Tamara a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Tamara's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Tamara is the Russian form of the biblical Tamar, says Behind the Name, from the Hebrew word for “date palm”. Wikipedia explains that Russian added the feminine ending -a, and that in Russia the name is linked with Queen Tamar of Georgia. Behind the Name credits Russian performers, including the ballerinas Tamara Karsavina and Tamara Toumanova, with bringing it to the English-speaking world.
Russian uses Toma, says Wikipedia, along with Tama, Mara, Tata and Tusya. English speakers more often go with Tami, Tammi, Tammie or Tammy, the short forms Behind the Name lists, and its English spellings include Tamera and Tamra.
Tamara de Lempicka, the Polish-born painter of polished Art Deco portraits, was nicknamed “The Baroness with a Brush”. Tamara Toumanova, one of the Baby Ballerinas of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, was discovered by George Balanchine and debuted at the Paris Opera at 10. And Tamara Mellon co-founded the luxury shoe brand Jimmy Choo.
Behind the Name says Tamara grew quickly in the US from 1957. Social Security data has it at 100th in the 1960s, when more than 39,000 American girls were named Tamara, then 90th in the 1970s and 144th in the 1980s. Wikipedia says it left the top 1,000 in 2010.
Cornwall has its own Tamara. Wikipedia retells a legend in which Tamara was a sprite, the daughter of gnomes, who escaped to the surface near Morwenstow and was turned into a river by her father when she refused to go back underground: the River Tamar. Today the 87-mile Tamara Coast to Coast Way follows the river.
Tamara’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Tamara’s Notebook” on the cover tells Tamara it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Tamara’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
