What does the name Brandy mean?

Brandy comes straight from the English word for the drink, says Behind the Name, and the word itself goes back to the Dutch brandewijn, “burnt wine”. Wikipedia adds that it has also served as a feminine form of Brandon, and that census records show Brandy in use as a man’s name in the United States in the mid-19th century. As a girls’ name it took off only in the 1960s and 1970s.

Brandy nicknames and other forms

Brandy comes in plenty of spellings. Behind the Name lists Brandi, Brandie, Brandee, Brande and Branda, and Wikipedia adds Brandye. The name is already short and friendly, so most Brandys simply keep it.

Some famous Brandys

Singer and actress Brandy Norwood, known simply as Brandy, starred in the sitcom Moesha and was the first African American to play Cinderella, in the 1997 TV film Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Her duet with Monica, “The Boy Is Mine”, spent thirteen weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won both singers their first Grammy Award.

Brandy through the decades

Brandy is a child of the 1970s and 1980s. US Social Security data puts it at 81st in the 1970s and 63rd in the 1980s, when more than 44,500 American girls were named Brandy, before it fell to 198th in the 1990s. Wikipedia says the single best year was 1978, when it ranked 37th.

Did you know?

Wikipedia credits much of the name’s rise to a 1972 hit, “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)” by Looking Glass, written by the band’s guitarist Elliot Lurie. It went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Brandy in the song is a barmaid in a busy harbor town, serving “a hundred ships a day” and still waiting for a sailor who loved the sea more than her.

Who is it for and how she can use it

Whether Brandy is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.

Why personalized works

Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Brandy on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
