Aubrey's Notebook puts her name front and center, written in flowing script across a soft watercolor apple blossom design.
Aubrey comes from Auberi, an Old French form of the Germanic Alberich, says Behind the Name, and the Normans brought it to England. Wikipedia breaks Alberich into alb, “elf”, and ric, “power” or “ruler”. It also says there was a separate medieval women’s name, from Albreda, “elf council”, which had died out by the 15th century.
Behind the Name lists the spellings Aubree, Aubrie and Aubrielle. Other relatives it lists include Alberic, the Italian Alberico and Oberon, a form found in literature. Bree is a common short form, though neither source lists it.
Aubrey Plaza became known as the deadpan April Ludgate on NBC’s Parks and Recreation. She later starred in FX’s Legion and in the second season of HBO’s The White Lotus, which earned her Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, and she produced films including Ingrid Goes West and Emily the Criminal.
Aubrey changed sides in the 20th century. US Social Security data has it at 113th in the 2000s and 24th in the 2010s, when more than 65,900 American girls were named Aubrey. Wikipedia says it was 101st for girls in 2023, still a strong choice.
A soft-rock song turned Aubrey into a girls’ name. Behind the Name and Wikipedia both credit Bread’s “Aubrey”, written by David Gates and released on the band’s 1972 album Guitar Man. It spent 11 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at No. 15, and Behind the Name says the name’s closeness to Audrey helped too.
Any Aubrey, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.
There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Aubrey can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
How big is Aubrey’s Notebook? About the size of a trade paperback book: 6 x 9 inches (15.2 x 22.9 cm), 160 lined pages.
