Where does the name Serenity come from?
Serenity comes from the English word for calm, says Behind the Name, which goes back to the Latin serenus, “clear, calm”. Wikipedia calls it a modern English name taken from the word “serenity”, meaning peaceful. It is one of the virtue names, alongside names like Grace and Hope.
Other forms of Serenity
Behind the Name lists no related names for Serenity, so there is no traditional short form. Families make their own, and some girls keep the whole name for its calm, gentle sound.
Well-known Serenitys
The best-known Serenity is a spaceship. Wikipedia says it is the Firefly-class ship in Joss Whedon’s TV series Firefly (2002) and his 2005 film Serenity, which won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation. Set in 2517, the film follows the ship’s crew of smugglers, whose captain and first mate fought on the losing side of a civil war. Wikipedia credits the show and the film with helping the name catch on.
Serenity’s popularity
Serenity rose quickly. US Social Security data has it at 177th in the 2000s and 67th in the 2010s, when more than 38,900 American girls were named Serenity. Wikipedia says it peaked in 2013 at 52nd, and it has been in the top 500 since 2000. It was one of the five most popular names for girls born to Black mothers in Virginia in 2023.
A few more things about Serenity
The Serenity Prayer asks for the serenity to accept what cannot be changed, the courage to change what can and the wisdom to know the difference. Wikipedia says the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr wrote a version in the early 1930s and preached it in 1943 in Heath, Massachusetts. Alcoholics Anonymous has used it since at least 1941, and Hallmark has printed it on greeting cards since at least the early 1960s.

A notebook for every Serenity
Serenity’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
Why choose a personalized notebook?
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Serenity’s Notebook” on the cover tells Serenity it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
