Ada: meaning and origin

Ada began as a short form of Germanic names such as Adelaide and Adelina, says Behind the Name, from the element adal, “noble”. Wikipedia adds other roots: the Hebrew Adah, “adornment”, the Igbo Ada, “first daughter”, and the Turkish ada, “island”. Saint Ada was a 7th-century abbess at Le Mans.

Nicknames and variants

Behind the Name lists Aada as the Finnish form, and Wikipedia links Ada to Adah, Adelaide and Adeline. Ada is short already, so most Adas keep it as it is.

Famous people named Ada

Ada Lovelace, born in 1815, was the daughter of the poet Lord Byron. She became a mathematician and worked on Charles Babbage’s proposed Analytical Engine. Wikipedia says her notes on the machine described a method for calculating Bernoulli numbers, often called the first published computer program. She is often considered the first computer programmer, and she called her own approach “poetical science”.

Ada was a Victorian hit. US Social Security data has it at 46th in the 1880s, 58th in the 1890s and 80th in the 1900s, and more than 15,200 American girls were named Ada in the 1910s. Wikipedia says it returned to the top 1,000 in 2004 after a 19-year absence.

Ada trivia

Ada Lovelace has a holiday and a programming language. Wikipedia says Ada Lovelace Day, held on the second Tuesday of October since 2009, celebrates women in science and technology. The Ada language was designed for the US Department of Defense from 1977 to 1983, to replace more than 450 languages, and was named after her.

How Ada can use it

Any Ada, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.

The little things that make it hers

There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Ada can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
