Carmen's Notebook is a lined journal with one name on the cover, hers. The name sits in flowing script above a soft pink watercolor apple blossom design.
Carmen is the medieval Spanish form of Carmel, says Behind the Name, from Nuestra Señora del Carmen, “Our Lady of Mount Carmel”. The spelling was shaped by the Latin carmen, “song”. Wikipedia says Mount Carmel is a mountain range in Israel, linked to the prophet Elijah.
Behind the Name lists Carmelita and Carmelina as Spanish diminutives and Carmela and Carmina as variants. Wikipedia adds the Portuguese Carmo and the Catalan Carme.
Carmen Miranda, “the Brazilian Bombshell”, was born Maria do Carmo Miranda da Cunha in Portugal in 1909 and grew up in Brazil. Wikipedia says she was famous for her fruit hats, and by 1945 she was the highest-paid woman in the United States. In 1941 she was the first Latin American star to leave her handprints and footprints at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, and she was the first South American with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Carmen has been steady for decades. US Social Security data has it at 179th in the 1950s, 166th in the 1960s, when more than 22,800 American girls were named Carmen, and 162nd in the 1970s. It is a classic in Spanish-speaking families.
Bizet’s opera Carmen shocked its first audience. Wikipedia says it opened at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on March 3, 1875, and Bizet died suddenly after the 33rd performance, never knowing it would become one of the most performed operas. Its “Habanera” and “Toreador Song” are among the best-known arias. Wikipedia adds that the title Our Lady of Mount Carmel goes back to a vision of Mary reported on July 16, 1251.
This is a notebook for every kind of Carmen: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.
Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Carmen’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
How big is Carmen’s Notebook? The notebook measures 6 x 9 inches (roughly 15 x 23 cm) and has 160 lined pages.
