Where does the name Sandra come from?

Sandra is a short form of Alessandra, the Italian form of Alexandra, which comes from the Greek Alexandros, generally interpreted as “defender of men”. It can also be short for Cassandra. Sandra reached the English-speaking world through the novelist George Meredith, who gave the name to the heroine of Emilia in England (1864), later reissued as Sandra Belloni (1887).

Other forms of Sandra

Sandy and Sandie are the traditional nicknames, and Sondra and Saundra are known English variants. French has the pretty Sandrine. And because Sandra comes from Alexandra, her name-cousins include Alexa, Sasha and Alessandra.

Well-known Sandras

Sandra Bullock won an Academy Award for The Blind Side. Sandra Oh is best known as Dr. Cristina Yang in Grey’s Anatomy and Eve Polastri in Killing Eve. And Sandra Day O’Connor made history in 1981 as the first woman to serve on the US Supreme Court.

Sandra’s popularity

Sandra was a postwar favorite. US Social Security data has it 6th in the 1940s, when more than 265,000 Sandras were born, then 12th in the 1950s and 11th in the 1960s. It left the top 200 after the 1990s. Most Sandras today are in their 60s and 70s, and many of them have a story about being called Sandy at school.

A few more things about Sandra

In Greek mythology, Cassandra, the other name Sandra can come from, was a prophetess and the daughter of King Priam of Troy. Italian has the pretty variations Sandrella and Sandrina, and French has Sandrine and Sandrelle. Sandra Bullock, meanwhile, was the world’s highest-paid actress in both 2010 and 2014.

Gift ideas with Sandra in mind

  • For a nurse or doctor. A pocket of calm for a Sandra who spends her days looking after others.
  • For a defender. Her name means “defender”, which suits a friend who always has your back.
  • A 60th or 70th birthday. Many Sandras are reaching big milestones, and a notebook is a lovely keepsake.

A notebook for every Sandra

Sandra’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Sandra’s Notebook” on the cover tells Sandra it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
