Where does the name Dorothy come from?

Dorothy is the English form of the Greek name Dorothea, meaning “gift of God”, from doron, “gift”, and theos, “god”. Those are the same two Greek words behind Theodore and Theodora, just in the opposite order. The name has been used in English for around 500 years, and it grew in popularity among Christians thanks to legends about Saint Dorothy of Caesarea.

Other forms of Dorothy

Dorothy has some of the most charming nicknames around: Dot, Dottie, Dotty, Dolly, Dodie and Dora. Dee and Thea are more modern choices. The original Greek form Dorothea is still used, and in Danish the name becomes Dorthe or Dorte.

Well-known Dorothys

The world’s most famous Dorothy is Dorothy Gale of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900). Dorothy Parker was a New York poet and critic famous for her wit. Dorothy Hodgkin won the 1964 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and mathematician Dorothy Vaughan was a pioneer at NASA’s Langley Research Center.

Dorothy’s popularity

Dorothy was one of America’s top names in the early 20th century. Social Security data has it 7th in the 1900s, 3rd in the 1910s and 2nd in the 1920s, when nearly 369,000 Dorothys were born. It left the top 200 after the 1960s, so it now has a lovely vintage feel, and the Dorothys you know may be grandmothers or great-grandmothers.

A few more things about Dorothy

In L. Frank Baum’s original book, Dorothy’s magic shoes are silver. They became ruby slippers for the 1939 film with Judy Garland. Dorothy Hodgkin, meanwhile, is the only British woman to have won a Nobel Prize in one of the three sciences, for her work on the structure of molecules using X-ray crystallography.

Gift ideas with Dorothy in mind

  • For a traveler. There’s no place like home, but a travel journal is the next best thing.
  • For a scientist or student. In honor of Dorothy Hodgkin and Dorothy Vaughan, a notebook for big ideas.
  • For a great-grandmother. A gift of God deserves a gift back: somewhere to write her life story.
  • For a Wizard of Oz fan. Somewhere over the rainbow, there’s a notebook with her name on it.

A notebook for every Dorothy

Dorothy’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Dorothy’s Notebook” on the cover tells Dorothy it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
