Where does the name Betty come from?

Betty started out as a pet form of Elizabeth, from the end of the 17th century. Elizabeth goes back to the Hebrew Elisheva, usually translated as “my God is an oath”. In the 17th and 18th centuries Betty was also used for Bethia, and in Latin America it is a familiar form of Beatriz. Today Betty is very much a name in its own right, with a cheerful, vintage charm.

Other forms of Betty

Betty shares a big family of names with Elizabeth: Bette, Bettie, Bettye, Bess, Bessie, Betsy and Beth. Some Bettys are really an Elizabeth on their birth certificate, and others are Betty through and through. Either way, the name on this cover is the one she actually answers to.

Well-known Bettys

Betty White had a television career spanning almost seven decades, including The Golden Girls. Betty Grable was one of Hollywood’s top 10 box-office stars every year from 1942 to 1951. And the cartoon star Betty Boop, created in 1930, is still instantly recognizable today.

Betty’s popularity

Betty boomed between the wars. In the US Social Security tables it ranked 4th in the 1920s and 2nd in the 1930s, when around 300,000 Bettys were born, before sliding out of the top 100 after the 1950s. Most Bettys today are in their 80s or 90s, though the name’s vintage charm is winning over younger parents again.

A few more things about Betty

Betty Boop first appeared in a small role in the 1930 cartoon Dizzy Dishes, and has been a pop-culture icon ever since. Wikipedia notes that Betty can also be a short form of Bethany, not just Elizabeth. So two Bettys may have very different names on their birth certificates, and both are welcome here.

Gift ideas with Betty in mind

  • For a great-grandmother. A place to write down the stories and recipes that should never be lost.
  • For a classic TV fan. A nod to Betty White and The Golden Girls.
  • For a 90th birthday. Many Bettys are reaching big milestones. Pair it with a pen and a photo album.
  • For a baker. Many Bettys have a recipe box full of family favorites. Give them a proper home.

A notebook for every Betty

Betty’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Betty’s Notebook” on the cover tells Betty it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
