Elizabeth's Notebook puts her name front and center, written in flowing script across a soft watercolor apple blossom design.
Elizabeth comes from Elisabet, the Greek form of the Hebrew name Elisheva, usually translated as “my God is an oath”. In the Bible, Elisheba is the wife of Aaron, and Elizabeth is the mother of John the Baptist. Saint Elizabeth of Hungary carried the name in the 12th century, and it became a favorite in England after Queen Elizabeth I came to the throne in the 16th century. Royal families across Europe have used it ever since.
Few names have as many nicknames as Elizabeth. Liz, Lizzie, Libby, Beth, Betsy, Bess, Betty, Eliza, Elsie, Ellie and Lisa all started as short forms, and many are now names in their own right. Jane Austen’s heroine is “Lizzy” to her family. In other languages she might be Elisabeth, Elisa or Isabel.
Queen Elizabeth II reigned for 70 years, from 1952 to 2022. Dame Elizabeth Taylor was one of the biggest stars of classic Hollywood, and Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki, raised in Melbourne, has become a star of film and television. Literature’s best-loved Elizabeth is Elizabeth Bennet, the quick-witted heroine of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (1813).
Elizabeth is the great survivor of American baby names. According to Behind the Name, it has never ranked lower than 30th since US records began in 1880. The Social Security decade tables have it in the top 25 every decade from the 1880s, when it ranked 4th, to the 2010s, when it was still 11th. That means an Elizabeth could be any age, from 8 to 98.
Isabel and Isabella began as the Occitan and Spanish forms of Elizabeth, and in medieval England Isabel was actually the more common of the two. Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, a king’s daughter, was remembered for using her wealth to help the poor, and an 18th-century empress of Russia also bore the name. Not many names can claim queens, an empress and a saint.
Any Elizabeth, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.
There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Elizabeth can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
How big is Elizabeth’s Notebook? About the size of a trade paperback book: 6 x 9 inches (15.2 x 22.9 cm), 160 lined pages.
