What does the name Sally mean?

Sally began as a pet form of Sarah. Behind the Name calls it a diminutive of Sarah that is often used independently, and Wikipedia explains how it happened: young children often have trouble saying the letter r, so it was swapped for an l, the same habit that turned Mary into Molly and Polly, Dorothy into Dolly and Harriet into Hallie. Wikipedia adds that Sally and Sallie have been used as names in their own right since the 1700s.

Sally nicknames and other forms

Sally is already a nickname, but it has a few of its own. Behind the Name lists Sal as the short form and Sallie, Sadie and Sarina as close variants, and Wikipedia notes that Sallie has been in use for centuries alongside Sally. Sal suits a friend who signs off quickly; Sadie is the vintage cousin.

Some famous Sallys

Astronaut and physicist Sally Ride flew aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger on the STS-7 mission in June 1983, becoming the first American woman in space and, at 32, the youngest American astronaut to have flown. Sally Field won two Academy Awards for Best Actress, for Norma Rae (1979) and Places in the Heart (1984). And Irish author Sally Rooney’s novels Conversations with Friends and Normal People both became television series; Normal People won the Costa Book Award in 2018.

Sally through the decades

Sally was a mid-century hit. US Social Security data has it in the girls’ top 200 from the 1880s, but its big decades came later: 70th in the 1930s, 65th in the 1940s, and 94th in the 1950s, when more than 46,000 American girls were named Sally. Wikipedia says its single best year was 1939, at 52nd, and Behind the Name says it was last in the US top 1000 in 2005, which makes a Sally notebook a nice fit for a grandmother or great-aunt.

Did you know?

Broadway helped make Sally famous. Wikipedia says the Jerome Kern musical Sally, about a dishwasher at the Alley Inn in New York who poses as a ballerina and joins the Ziegfeld Follies, opened in 1920 and ran for 570 performances, one of the longest Broadway runs up to that time. Its song “Look for the Silver Lining” is still one of Kern’s best known.

Gift ideas for a Sally

Who is it for and how she can use it

Whether Sally is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.

Why personalized works

Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Sally on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
