Give Eileen a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Eileen's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Eileen is an Irish name. Behind the Name calls it an anglicized form of Eibhlín, also sometimes considered an Irish form of Helen, and says it became popular outside Ireland near the end of the 19th century. Wikipedia says Eibhlín is an Irish form of the Norman French name Aveline, from the Germanic Avi, possibly meaning “desire”, and that Eileen is related to Evelyn and to the variant Aileen. It is pronounced eye-LEEN or EYE-leen.
Behind the Name lists Aileen, Alene, Aline, Ilene, Ilean and Ileen as English variants, Eibhlín as the Irish original, and Aveline as the Norman root. Wikipedia names Aileen as the closest variant. “Leenie” is a sweet pet name for a little Eileen.
Astronaut Eileen Collins was the first woman to pilot the Space Shuttle, in 1995, and the first woman to command a US spacecraft, on STS-93 in 1999. Irish designer Eileen Gray, born near Enniscorthy in County Wexford, was a pioneer of modern architecture, best known for the house E-1027 on the French Riviera. And freestyle skier Eileen Gu is the most decorated freestyle skier in Olympic history, with gold medals at Beijing 2022 and Milan-Cortina 2026.
Eileen was steadily popular for 50 years. US Social Security data has it in the girls’ top 200 from the 1910s through the 1960s, peaking at 89th in the 1940s and having its biggest decade in the 1950s, when more than 36,000 American girls were named Eileen. Behind the Name says it ranked 654th in the US in 2025, so it is still around, just rarer.
Eileen has one of the 1980s’ biggest songs. Wikipedia says “Come On Eileen” by Dexys Midnight Runners was released in June 1982, reached No. 1 in the US and the UK, was Britain’s best-selling single of 1982, and won Best British Single at the 1983 Brit Awards. Wikipedia adds that Eileen also features in classic Irish songs.
Eileen’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Eileen’s Notebook” on the cover tells Eileen it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Eileen’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
