Give Dana a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Dana's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Dana has more than one root. Behind the Name lists four separate entries: the feminine form of Daniel or Dan; an English use from a surname, first given in honor of Richard Henry Dana Jr., author of Two Years Before the Mast; a Slavic short form of Bogdana, Yordana or Gordana; and a Persian name meaning “wise”. Wikipedia adds that in Arabic, Dana or Danah refers to a large, perfect pearl, and that in Hebrew the feminine of Dan means “arbiter”.
Dana is already short, so its relatives are mostly cousins. Behind the Name lists Danya (Hebrew) and Danka (Slovak) as variants, Danuše and Danuška as Czech diminutives, and Danna as an English relative. “Dee” works as an easy everyday option for a Dana who wants something even shorter.
Dana Delany won two Primetime Emmy Awards for playing Colleen McMurphy on China Beach and has voiced Lois Lane longer than anyone else, across 17 years. Swimmer Dana Vollmer is a five-time Olympic gold medalist who set a world record winning the 100-meter butterfly at London 2012. And the Irish singer known simply as Dana won the 1970 Eurovision Song Contest as a schoolgirl with “All Kinds of Everything”, later serving as a Member of the European Parliament.
Dana peaked when Gen X was born. US Social Security data has it entering the girls’ top 200 in the 1950s, jumping to 82nd in the 1960s and peaking at 57th in the 1970s, when more than 51,000 American girls were named Dana. It was 77th in the 1980s and 164th in the 1990s. Wikipedia says it was among the 100 most popular girls’ names in the US between 1960 and 1990, so most Danas are now in their 30s to 60s.
Dana can be a boy’s name too. Wikipedia calls it unisex and says that as a men’s first name it ranked 314th out of 1,219 in the 1990 US census. Behind the Name says the surname use began as a tribute to the lawyer Richard Henry Dana Jr. (1815-1882), whose memoir Two Years Before the Mast made the family name famous.
Dana’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Dana’s Notebook” on the cover tells Dana it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Dana’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
