Where does the name Patsy come from?

Patsy is a pet form rather than a formal name. Behind the Name calls it a variant of Patty, and also a diminutive of Patrick, while Wikipedia says it usually stands for Patricia and occasionally for other names with “Pat” in them, such as Cleopatra, Patience or Patrice. In older usage it could even be a nickname for Martha or Matilda, by the same M-to-P swap that turned Molly into Polly.

Other forms of Patsy

Patsy is already the nickname, but Behind the Name lists a long line of English relatives: Pat, Patti, Pattie, Patty, Tricia, Trish and Trisha. Most of them lead back to Patricia.

Well-known Patsys

Patsy Cline was one of the first country singers to cross over into pop; her hits included Willie Nelson’s song “Crazy”, and in 1973 she became the first female performer inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Patsy Mink of Hawaii was the first woman of color and first Asian-American woman elected to Congress. She co-authored Title IX in 1972, and the law was later renamed in her honor.

Patsy’s popularity

Patsy belongs to the mid-century. US Social Security data has it at 61st in the 1930s and 74th in the 1940s, when more than 40,200 American girls were named Patsy, then 161st in the 1950s. After that it dropped out of the top 200, so most Patsys today are grandmothers.

A few more things about Patsy

Patsy has presidential history. Wikipedia says George Washington called his wife Martha “Patsy” in private letters, and Thomas Jefferson’s eldest daughter, also named Martha, was known as Patsy too, while her sister Mary was Polly. So two of the best-known Patsys of the founding era were officially Marthas.

Gift ideas with Patsy in mind

A notebook for every Patsy

Patsy’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Patsy’s Notebook” on the cover tells Patsy it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
