Nora's Notebook puts her name front and center, written in flowing script across a soft watercolor apple blossom design.
Nora is mainly a short form of Honora, from the Latin honor, Wikipedia says, and Behind the Name adds Eleanor; in Hungary it is short for Eleonóra. Behind the Name also lists a separate Nora, an alternate spelling of the Arabic Nura, from nur, “light”. Henrik Ibsen used the name for his heroine in A Doll’s House (1879).
Norah is the best-known variant, and Behind the Name gives Nonie as an English pet form and Noreen and Nóirín as Irish ones. Related names include Lenora, Leonora and Nell.
Nora Ephron wrote When Harry Met Sally…, which won a BAFTA for best original screenplay, and directed Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail and Julie & Julia. Nora Roberts has written more than 225 novels, plus police procedurals as J. D. Robb, and was the first inductee into the Romance Writers of America Hall of Fame.
Nora has come full circle. US Social Security data has it at 56th in the 1880s and in the top 200 through the 1920s. It then disappeared from the top 200 for decades before returning at 51st in the 2010s, when more than 44,000 American girls were named Nora. Wikipedia says it was Norway’s top girls’ name in 2012.
Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, the play about Nora Helmer, premiered at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen on December 20, 1879, and caused a storm of controversy. Wikipedia says that in 2006, the centenary of Ibsen’s death, it was the most performed play in the world, and UNESCO added Ibsen’s manuscripts of it to its Memory of the World Register in 2001.
Any Nora, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.
There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Nora can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
How big is Nora’s Notebook? About the size of a trade paperback book: 6 x 9 inches (15.2 x 22.9 cm), 160 lined pages.
