Give Nellie a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Nellie's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Nellie is a pet form. Behind the Name calls it a diminutive of Nell and other names containing “nel”, and Wikipedia lists the names it comes from: Helen, Ellen, Eleanor, Petronella, Cornelia, Penelope and more. Many Victorian Nellies were Helens or Ellens on their birth certificates.
Behind the Name lists Nelly as a variant of Nellie and Nell as its root, and Wikipedia adds the longer names behind it, Helen, Ellen, Eleanor and Cornelia. A Nellie can always borrow a little formality from one of them.
Dame Nellie Melba, born Helen Porter Mitchell, took her stage name from Melbourne, became the leading lyric soprano at London’s Covent Garden from 1888, and was the first Australian classical musician to win international fame. Nellie Bly, the pen name of Elizabeth Cochran, went undercover in a New York asylum and raced around the world in 72 days. And Canadian suffragist Nellie McClung was one of the Famous Five who took the Persons Case to court so women could sit in the Senate.
Nellie was a top-20 name in the 1880s. US Social Security data has it at 19th that decade and 30th in the 1890s, with its biggest numbers in the 1910s and 1920s, about 30,000 girls each. It was down to 135th in the 1930s. Nellies today are mostly great-grandmothers, or very new babies with vintage-loving parents.
A famous dessert carries a Nellie’s name. Wikipedia says Peach Melba, peaches and raspberry sauce with vanilla ice cream, was created in 1892 or 1893 by the French chef Auguste Escoffier at the Savoy Hotel in London to honor Nellie Melba.
Nellie’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Nellie’s Notebook” on the cover tells Nellie it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Nellie’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
