A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Avery. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Avery started as an English surname from the Norman French form of Alfred or Alberich, says Behind the Name. Wikipedia traces it to the Old English Ælfred, made of ælf, “elf”, and ræd, “counsel”, so Avery literally means “elf counsel”. It was a boys’ name for centuries and began to be used for girls in the late 20th century.
Behind the Name lists Averi and Averie as the feminine spellings of Avery, and Wikipedia’s list includes pageant titleholder Averie Bishop. The original spelling is still by far the most common.
Most of Avery’s best-known bearers are men, since the name was masculine for so long, but the women are catching up. Wikipedia lists artist Avery Singer, known for digitally assisted paintings, singer-songwriter Avery Anna, born in 2004, and Canadian TV journalist Avery Haines. On screen there is Avery Jessup, Jack Donaghy’s love interest in 30 Rock.
Avery is a 21st-century girls’ name. US Social Security data has it at 78th in the 2000s and 17th in the 2010s, when nearly 83,000 American girls were named Avery. Behind the Name says it ranked 37th for girls in the US in 2025, far ahead of its rank for boys. Most Averys are still children.
Television helped turn Avery into a girls’ name. Behind the Name says the sitcom Murphy Brown (1988–1998) used it for both the mother and the son of the main character, and that by 1998 it was more popular for girls in the US, perhaps helped by a character in the film Jerry Maguire (1996).
Whether Avery is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Avery on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Avery’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
