Agnes's Notebook puts her name front and center, written in flowing script across a soft watercolor apple blossom design.
Agnes comes from the Greek Hagne, from hagnos, “chaste”, says Behind the Name; Wikipedia translates it as “pure” or “holy”. The name later became linked with the Latin agnus, “lamb”, which is why Saint Agnes is so often shown with a lamb. Wikipedia lists its European forms: Agnese in Italian, Agnès in French, Inês in Portuguese and Inés in Spanish.
Behind the Name lists Aggie and Nancy as English diminutives of Agnes, with Annis and Inez as variants, Agnetha in Sweden and Nesta in Wales. Aggie is the cozy everyday choice, and Nancy is the surprise on the list.
Saint Agnes of Rome was martyred on 21 January 304 at the age of 12 or 13 and is remembered as a virgin martyr across the Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican and Lutheran churches. Agnes Moorehead joined Orson Welles’s Mercury Players in 1937, appeared in Citizen Kane, earned four Academy Award nominations, and played Endora on Bewitched from 1964 to 1972, a role that brought her six Emmy nominations.
Agnes was a top-50 name for a generation. US Social Security data has it at 39th in the 1890s and 43rd in the 1900s, with its biggest numbers in the 1910s and 1920s, about 39,000 girls in each decade. Behind the Name says it fell after the 1930s and left the US top 1,000 in 1972, but it is a hit again in Denmark, where it ranked third in 2025.
Saint Agnes’s lamb is still part of a living tradition. Wikipedia says that on her feast day two lambs are brought from the Trappist abbey of Tre Fontane in Rome to be blessed by the Pope. In summer they are shorn, and the wool is woven into the pallia the Pope gives to newly appointed archbishops.
Any Agnes, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.
There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Agnes can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
How big is Agnes’s Notebook? About the size of a trade paperback book: 6 x 9 inches (15.2 x 22.9 cm), 160 lined pages.
