A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Nancy. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Nancy began as a medieval pet form of Annis, an old English form of Agnes. Since the 18th century it has been treated as a pet form of Ann, which goes back to the Hebrew Hannah, meaning “favor” or “grace”. Today it is usually regarded as a name in its own right. The French city of Nancy, in the Lorraine region, has the same spelling but a different origin.
Nan and Nance are the traditional short forms of Nancy. You’ll also see spellings such as Nanci, Nancie and Nancee. Because Nancy grew out of Ann, a Nancy is a cousin of every Ann, Anne and Anna, which makes it easy to find a matching gift for her namesakes.
Teen detective Nancy Drew has been solving mysteries in books since 1930. Nancy Wake, a New Zealand-born Australian, joined the French Resistance and Britain’s Special Operations Executive in World War II. And English novelist Nancy Mitford wrote witty novels about upper-class life in England and France.
Nancy is an all-American favorite. In the US Social Security decade tables it appears in the top 200 every decade from the 1880s to the 1990s, and it was a top-10 name in the 1930s, the 1940s (7th) and the 1950s, when nearly 287,000 Nancys were born. So you’ll find Nancys in almost every generation of the family.
Wikipedia explains one charming theory about how Nancy came about. In some old English dialects people said “mine” instead of “my”, so “mine Ancy” gradually became “Nancy”. Agnes, the name at the start of the chain, means “pure” or “holy”.
Whether Nancy is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Nancy on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Nancy’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
