Monique: meaning and origin

Monique is the French form of Monica, says Behind the Name. Monica’s meaning is unknown and it is probably of Berber or Phoenician origin. It was borne by a 4th-century North African saint, the mother of Saint Augustine, and was later linked to the Latin moneo, “to advise”.

Nicknames and variants

Behind the Name lists Mona as a short form of Monica in Scandinavia, and gives Monica and Monika as the name’s English and European equivalents. Mo is a quick pet name, too, as the comedian Mo’Nique shows.

Famous people named Monique

Comedian and actress Mo’Nique was born Monique Angela Imes in Woodlawn, Maryland, in 1967. Wikipedia says she starred in the UPN series The Parkers and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Precious (2009), the fourth African-American woman to win that award. She had earned a Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album in 2002.

Monique was a 1970s to 1990s name. US Social Security data has it at 166th in the 1970s, 125th in the 1980s, when more than 23,800 American girls were named Monique, and 180th in the 1990s. Wikipedia says it has been used in the US since about 1955.

Monique trivia

Santa Monica, California, is named after the same saint. Wikipedia gives two stories: one says it was named for her feast day, the other that Juan Crespí named it for a pair of springs that recalled the tears Saint Monica shed for her son Augustine. Gaspar de Portolá’s party camped there on August 3, 1769. Her life is told in Augustine’s Confessions.

How Monique can use it

Any Monique, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.

The little things that make it hers

There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Monique can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
