Where does the name Miranda come from?

Miranda comes from the Latin mirandus, “admirable” or “worthy of being admired”, say Behind the Name and Wikipedia. Shakespeare created it as a first name for the heroine of The Tempest (1611), who is stranded on an island with her father Prospero. In the play she is greeted as “Admired Miranda!”, a pun on the meaning.

Other forms of Miranda

Behind the Name gives Randi and Randy as English short forms, and lists Marinda and Myranda as variant spellings. Many Mirandas also simply go by Mira or Andi, though those are family choices rather than listed forms.

Well-known Mirandas

Country singer Miranda Lambert broke through with Kerosene (2005), and her title track won her a Grammy nomination; “The House That Built Me” later topped the Hot Country Songs chart. She also formed the Pistol Annies in 2011 with Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley, and Wikipedia says she has won more ACM awards than any other artist.

Miranda’s popularity

Miranda is a 1990s favorite. US Social Security data has it at 129th in the 1980s, then 84th in the 1990s, when more than 42,200 American girls were named Miranda, and 140th in the 2000s. Wikipedia credits a 1948 British film about a mermaid called Miranda for an earlier revival.

A few more things about Miranda

One of the moons of Uranus is named Miranda, after Shakespeare’s heroine. Gerard Kuiper discovered it in 1948, and the only close-up images come from Voyager 2’s flyby in January 1986. Wikipedia says it has Verona Rupes, a scarp roughly 20 kilometers high that may be the highest cliff in the solar system.

A notebook for every Miranda

Miranda’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Miranda’s Notebook” on the cover tells Miranda it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
