Marsha's Notebook is a lined journal with one name on the cover, hers. The name sits in flowing script above a soft pink watercolor apple blossom design.
Marsha is a variant of Marcia, says Behind the Name, and Wikipedia agrees. Marcia is the feminine form of the Roman family name Marcius, and as a Roman first name it also served as the feminine of Marcus. Behind the Name says it was borne by a few very minor saints and has been used in the English-speaking world since the 18th century.
Behind the Name lists Marci, Marcie and Marcy as pet forms, and Marcia is the original spelling. Marsha simply spells the name the way it sounds.
Astronaut Marsha Ivins was born in Baltimore in 1951 and studied aerospace engineering at the University of Colorado. Wikipedia says she worked at NASA as an engineer and flight engineer before becoming an astronaut candidate in 1984, and she flew on five Space Shuttle missions, from 1990 to 2001, including a 1997 flight to the Russian space station Mir. She retired from NASA at the end of 2010.
Marsha is a baby boom name. US Social Security data has it at 114th in the 1940s and 105th in the 1950s, when more than 41,500 American girls were named Marsha. Its parent spelling Marcia was popular at the same time.
Actress Marsha Hunt was born Marcia Virginia Hunt, so she used both spellings. Wikipedia says she appeared in films such as Pride and Prejudice (1940), was blacklisted by Hollywood studios in the 1950s, and turned to fighting world hunger and helping homeless shelters. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960 and died in 2022 at the age of 104.
This is a notebook for every kind of Marsha: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.
Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Marsha’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
How big is Marsha’s Notebook? The notebook measures 6 x 9 inches (roughly 15 x 23 cm) and has 160 lined pages.
