Where does the name Angelica come from?

Angelica comes from the Latin angelicus, “angelic”, says Behind the Name, which in turn comes from the Greek angelos, “messenger”. The Italian poets Boiardo and Ariosto made Angelica the heroine of their Orlando poems (1483 and 1532), where both Orlando and Rinaldo fall for her. It has been a given name since the 18th century.

Other forms of Angelica

Behind the Name lists Anjelica as an English variant and Kiki as a Greek pet form, and Wikipedia gives Angélica, Angelika and Angélique as forms in other languages. Angie is a natural shortening, although the sources do not list it.

Well-known Angelicas

Angelica Schuyler Church, born in Albany in 1756, was the eldest daughter of General Philip Schuyler and the sister-in-law of Alexander Hamilton. Wikipedia says she corresponded with Thomas Jefferson and the Marquis de Lafayette, and the town of Angelica, New York, is named after her. Renée Elise Goldsberry won a Tony for playing her in Hamilton.

Angelica’s popularity

Angelica was a 1990s name. US Social Security data has it at 155th in the 1980s, 105th in the 1990s, when more than 31,300 American girls were named Angelica, and 184th in the 2000s. Behind the Name shows it is popular in Italy and Puerto Rico in recent years.

A few more things about Angelica

Angelica is also an herb. Wikipedia says garden angelica, Angelica archangelica, grows wild across the far north, from Norway to Iceland and Greenland. Its long green stems are candied and used to decorate cakes, and its roots are among the most common botanicals used to make gin. It also flavors Chartreuse and Bénédictine.

A notebook for every Angelica

Angelica’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Angelica’s Notebook” on the cover tells Angelica it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
