Give Dora a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Dora's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Dora is a short form of Dorothy, Theodora or Isidora, says Behind the Name. Wikipedia explains that it comes from the Greek doron, “gift”, and that Theodora means “God’s gift”. It can also be short for other -dora names such as Eudora and Isadora, and in Ireland Dora was used as an English form of Doireann.
Behind the Name lists Dory, Dot, Dottie, Dodie and Dolly in the same family, and Wikipedia mentions Doreen and Dorinda. Dora itself is already the short form, so most Doras keep it.
Dora Maar, born Henriette Theodora Markovitch in Paris in 1907, grew up partly in Buenos Aires and became a Surrealist photographer. Wikipedia says she was in a relationship with Pablo Picasso from 1935 to 1943 and was the model for The Weeping Woman. She also photographed each stage of his painting Guernica (1937), and her own work hung in Surrealist shows in Paris, New York and London beside Man Ray and Salvador Dalí.
Dora was a Victorian favorite. US Social Security data has it at 50th in the 1880s and in the top 200 through the 1930s, with its biggest decade in the 1920s, when more than 18,300 American girls were named Dora. Dora the Explorer made it familiar to a whole new generation.
Dora the Explorer first aired on Nickelodeon on August 14, 2000. Wikipedia says the show followed Dora and her best friend Boots the Monkey on a mission in every episode and taught young viewers basic Spanish. By 2014 the franchise’s retail sales had passed 15 billion dollars, and it had spun off Go, Diego, Go!
Dora’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Dora’s Notebook” on the cover tells Dora it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Dora’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
