Blanche: meaning and origin

Blanche comes from a medieval French nickname meaning “white” or “fair”, says Behind the Name, from the Germanic word blankaz. Wikipedia says it may first have described a girl with blonde hair or very fair skin. An early bearer was Blanca of Navarre, and when her granddaughter married Louis VIII of France, the name became more common there.

Nicknames and variants

Behind the Name lists Blanch as an English variant, and the same name appears as Blanca in Spanish and Catalan, Bianca in Italian, Branca in Portuguese and Blanka in Polish and Czech. That gives a Blanche plenty of international twins.

Famous people named Blanche

Blanche of Castile, born in Palencia in 1188, was the granddaughter of Henry II of England and married Louis VIII of France. Wikipedia says she ruled France as regent twice for her son Louis IX, raising armies and signing treaties. One historian wrote that she “may be counted among the Kings of France”.

Blanche was a Victorian favorite. US Social Security data has it at 53rd in the 1880s and in the top 100 through the 1910s, when more than 21,900 American girls were named Blanche, then 135th in the 1920s. Wikipedia says it was also in France’s top 100 from 1900 to 1928.

Blanche trivia

Theater’s most famous Blanche is Blanche DuBois of A Streetcar Named Desire, Tennessee Williams’s 1947 play, which won the Pulitzer Prize. Wikipedia says Williams wrote the part for Tallulah Bankhead, and that Vivien Leigh won her second Academy Award playing Blanche in the 1951 film opposite Marlon Brando.

How Blanche can use it

Any Blanche, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.

The little things that make it hers

There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Blanche can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
