A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Marlene. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Marlene is a blend of Maria and Magdalene, so it points to Mary Magdalene of the New Testament, says Behind the Name. Wikipedia calls it a German name, popularized by Marlene Dietrich, whose real name was Marie Magdalene. In German it is said mar-LAY-nuh, and in North America usually mar-LEEN.
Behind the Name lists Marlena and Marleen as English variants and Marlen as a German one, and Wikipedia mentions the same spellings. In French it is Marlène. Mar or Lena are possible short forms, though neither source lists them.
Marlene Dietrich became an international star as Lola Lola in The Blue Angel (1930) and was nominated for an Oscar for Morocco. She entertained Allied troops during World War II and received the US Medal of Freedom in 1947, which she called her proudest achievement. Golfer Marlene Hagge was one of the thirteen founders of the LPGA in 1950 and is in the World Golf Hall of Fame.
Marlene arrived with Dietrich’s fame. Wikipedia says it was a US top-100 name from 1931 to 1942. Social Security data has it at 58th in the 1930s, when more than 37,300 American girls were named Marlene, then 109th in the 1940s and 145th in the 1950s.
Wikipedia says the wartime song “Lili Marleen” also spread the name. It began as a poem written in 1915, was set to music in 1938 and first recorded by Lale Andersen in 1939, and it was loved by soldiers on both sides. Dietrich recorded a famous version, and a 2005 box set gathered nearly 200 recordings.
Whether Marlene is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Marlene on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Marlene’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
Where do I buy it? On Amazon. It’s printed on demand and shipped by Amazon, so delivery and returns go through your usual Amazon account.
