A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Marjorie. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Marjorie is a medieval variant of Margery, Behind the Name explains, influenced by the name of the herb marjoram. Wikipedia traces it back through Old French to the Latin Margarita, “pearl”, which makes it a cousin of Margaret. Both sources say it was rare after the Middle Ages but was revived at the end of the 19th century, and Wikipedia lists Margery, Marjory and Margaery as other spellings.
Marjorie comes with friendly short forms. Behind the Name lists Marge, Margie, Marje and Jorie, and Wikipedia adds Marj. Jorie is the unexpected one, taking the end of the name instead of the start, while Marge and Margie are shared with the wider Margaret family.
Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings lived in rural Florida and won the 1939 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for The Yearling, about a boy who adopts an orphaned fawn. Marjorie Merriweather Post, daughter of C. W. Post and owner of General Foods, was for much of her life known as the wealthiest woman in the United States, and her Florida mansion was Mar-a-Lago. And Australian dramatic soprano Marjorie Lawrence, noted for Wagner, was afflicted by polio from 1941, and her life story became the film Interrupted Melody (1955).
Marjorie was a favorite of the 1910s and 1920s. US Social Security data has it 39th in the 1910s and at its best rank, 20th, in the 1920s, when more than 91,000 American girls were named Marjorie. It was 43rd in the 1930s, 96th in the 1940s and 167th in the 1950s before leaving the top 200, so most Marjories today are in their 70s and older.
Marjorie Lawrence took Wagner literally. Wikipedia says she was the first Metropolitan Opera soprano to perform the immolation scene in Götterdämmerung by riding her horse into the flames, as Wagner had intended.
Whether Marjorie is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Marjorie on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Marjorie’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
