Where does the name Clara come from?

Clara is the feminine form of the Latin name Clarus, “clear, bright, famous”. Behind the Name and Wikipedia both say it was popularized by the 13th-century Saint Clare of Assisi, called Chiara in Italian, a follower of Saint Francis who left her privileged background and founded the order of Poor Clares. Clare was the usual English form in the Middle Ages, but the Latin spelling Clara overtook it in the 19th century. Behind the Name says it was later eclipsed by the French Claire before recovering.

Other forms of Clara

Behind the Name lists Clarette as an English diminutive and Chiarina and Claretta in Italian, with Clare, Claire, Clarinda, Kiara, Chiara and Klara as related forms. Wikipedia adds the Kurdish Glara, a related name meaning “vision or brightness”.

Well-known Claras

Clara Schumann was one of the most distinguished pianists of the Romantic era, with a 61-year concert career, and also composed a piano concerto, chamber music and songs. And silent-film star Clara Bow became “The It Girl” after the 1927 film It and appeared in 58 films.

Clara’s popularity

Clara was a Victorian favorite. US Social Security data has it at its best rank, 9th, in the 1880s, and with its biggest count in the 1920s, when more than 48,000 American girls were named Clara, though by then it ranked 55th. It fell to 137th in the 1940s and out of the top 200, then returned at 119th in the 2010s.

A notebook for every Clara

Clara’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Clara’s Notebook” on the cover tells Clara it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
